The main goal of NILD Educational Therapy® is the development of clear, efficient thinking. Students are given tools to enable them to overcome their learning deficits. While tutoring typically focuses on content, educational therapy builds efficient learning processes. NILD Educational Therapy® teaches students how to think rather than what to think.
How can NILD educational therapy help my child?
Educational therapists are different from both tutors and mentors. Tutoring helps sharpen skills in specific subject areas. Typically tutors help students with homework assignments, various projects and with study skills. Mentors encourage students to stay motivated. Educational therapists, on the other hand, provide targeted support for each student’s individual deficits. Student deficits are diagnosed through a battery of tests that measure and compare the student’s potential with his or her academic performance at home or in the classroom. Various carefully selected techniques are chosen to target the deficit areas of each individual student. Eventually, students are better able to stay focused on the teacher’s voice, hear and remember information, read information on the board or overhead, spell accurately, and record information quickly, easily and legibly.
Who qualifies for the program?
Does your child experience intense frustration with academics even though you feel he or she is capable of learning? Common issues are the inability to express thoughts verbally or in writing, poor spelling, illegible handwriting, and difficulty with reading and math. The good news is that learning differences can be pinpointed when they are identified. The NILD techniques are effective no matter what age your child is.
When do students complete the program?
When students exhibit independence and success in the regular classroom, they are ready to exit the program. This decision is based upon recommendations from the educational therapist, and classroom teachers or parents.
